Steven L. Mitchell

Steven L. Mitchell of Cuba, Missouri, age 55, passed suddenly from this life to be with his Lord in Heaven on April 27th, 2023. Steve was born on October 26, 1967, in Sullivan, Missouri to the union of John Edward and Joan (Pinnell) Mitchell. He was a graduate of Cuba High School “Class of 1986.”

Steve inherited his father’s love for horses that would lead him to his career as a horseshoer, his passion for showing horses, and to his loving wife, Amy. After meeting Amy at a horseshow in the fall of 1992, he knew he would marry her just a few short months later. Steve and Amy (VanBenthuysen) were united in marriage on May 22nd, 1993. To their marriage was born three beautiful children; Hannah, Molly, and Colt.

Steve leaves behind a legacy of loving and living life to the fullest each and every day. He loved the Lord, his wife, his children, and his family. This was his priority in life. Second came horses and hunting.

Steve carried out his passion for horses as a well-known horseshoer and showing horses with his family. He dedicated his career to learning and serving equestrians all over the country with his knowledge. He was well-known in the horse industry not only as a horseshoer, but a bright, warm smile that many were eager to see when they’d meet at a horse show. Some of his proudest moments in life were with his family at horse shows. He was so proud of his kids and the riders that they are.  He loved riding and showing reiners with them.  He loved the friendships he gained, but his drive to succeed was unmatched and fueled by the thrill of running hard and sliding big.

Steve loved to ride his mule in the mountains to hunt with his children and closest friends. When he returned from the mountains, he always had a big story to tell. To hear him tell a story, one could tell his character. It was so easy to know how much he loved adventures of all kinds and the camaraderie that came with it.

Steve lived a life full of fellowship and creating memories with those he loved. He will be remembered as a Christian man who knew life was a blessing and lived it with no reserve.

He was preceded in death by his father John Edward Mitchell; father-in-law David VanBenthuysen; brother-in-law Davie VanBenthuysen.

Those who are left to treasure his memory and to continue his legacy are his loving wife of thirty years, Amy Mitchell of Cuba; three amazing children Hannah and husband Drew Layman of Cuba, Molly Mitchell and fiancé Tracy Criner of Haskell, Oklahoma, and Colt Mitchell of Cuba; mother Joan Mitchell of Cuba; brother Scott and wife Sandy Mitchell of Cuba; sister Shellee and husband Shawn Gann of Cuba; mother-in-law Nikki VanBenthuysen of Cuba; sister-in-law Dawn and husband Sam Anderson of Cuba; nieces and nephews Samantha and husband Robert Ridley, Shayla and husband Evin Farris, Ty Gann, Kimmy and husband Travis Milner, Matt and wife Kaylin VanBenthuysen, Nick Lovelace, Justin Lovelace and Emily Lovelace; aunts, uncles, cousins, great-nieces, great-nephews and many friends.
