Ret. Sgt. Joseph S. "Joe" Janes, Jr. of Cuba, Missouri was born June 27, 1962 at St. Louis, Missouri to the union of Joseph S., Sr. and Etta (nee: Sanders) Janes and left from this life on Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at Phelps County Regional Medical Center at the age of 55 years. At the young age of seventeen, Joe joined the United States Army and at the age of forty-five Joe reenlisted in the United States Army. He retired as a Sargent on February 24, 2012. While serving in the Army Joe earned the Iraq Campaign Medal with two Campaign Stars, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal (awarded twice), Army Good Conduct Medal (awarded three times), National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (awarded twice), the Marksmanship Ribbon Joe served in Germany and Iraq during his service career. He attended Combat Life Savers Course, one week, 2009, Motor Transport Operator Course, 8 weeks, 2008. Joe was forty-five years old when he served in Iraq. After retiring Joe enjoyed boating, fishing and camping. What he loved most was spending time with his family and friends. Joe was a loving son, brother, husband, father, step father, father-in-law, grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend of many. He will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him. He is preceded in death by his father Joseph S. Janes, Sr. and other family and friends. Those who are left to treasure his memory and to continue his legacy are his loving wife Diana Janes of the home, his mom Etta Janes of DeSoto, Missouri, two sons Joseph S., III and wife Rosa Janes and Gregory Janes and companion Meghan Cornett both of Indianapolis, Indiana, four step daughters; Amanda and husband Tony Stevens of Iron Mountain Lake, Missouri, Crystal Taylor of East St. Louis, Illinois, Lisa Taylor of Cumberland, Maryland and Leann Swain of East St. Louis, Illinois, nine grandchildren; Kallista Rose, Kaynen Janes, Kynndall Janes, Avery Janes, Audri Smith, Jaxon Janes, Gabryl Akers, Angelina Akers, Mythias Janes and one on the way Atticus Wade Janes, fourteen step grandchildren, two sisters; Tina and husband David Barnett of Bradenton, Florida and Pam and husband Jim Nicolay of Wildwood, Missouri, two brothers Richard and wife Yevette Janes of Lake of the Ozarks and Michael and wife Dawn Janes of O'Fallon, Missouri, aunts and uncles; Elnor Troegor of St. Louis, Missouri, Betty and husband Cecil Prater of Bonne Terre, Missouri and Edith Ann and husband Frank Fortuna of Scottsdale, Arizona, two brothers-in-law; Paul and wife Jean Gibson-Medley and Robert Medley of St. Louis, one sister-in-law Amber Medley Terry and husband Lavonne Terry of Kirkwood, Missouri, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends. Visitation will be Monday, April 30, 2018 from 5:00 till 8:00 pm at the Mizell Funeral Home, 904 W Washington Street, Cuba. Funeral service will be 11:00 am Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at the Chapel of Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, 2900 Sheridan, St. Louis with full military honors. Honored to serve as pall bearers are Andrew Burke, Tim Hahn, Shawn Leiter, Daniel Joyce, CJ Slusher and Michael Tanner. The Mizell Funeral Home of Cuba is honored to be serving Joe's family.
