Martha L. Switzer

Martha Lee (Scott) Switzer was born on October 25, 1930 in Commerce, Missouri. She was the oldest of 15 children, born to John K. Scott and Clara A. Leible Scott. She married Floyd Lee Switzer, or Pat as he was better known, on October 26, 1950, and together, they were blessed with seven children.

On November 7, 2020, Pat came down from Heaven, took her hand, and escorted his wife of 70 years through the pearly gates to meet her Lord. Also waiting there to greet her was their son Gary, her parents, Pat's parents, her siblings (Mary, Dorothy, Frances, Charles, Pete, and Judy), Pat's siblings (Clyde, Ottis, and Dee), and her brothers-in-law (Richard, Dennis, and Donald).

Martha was a remarkable woman and truly was a beautiful soul. She was a second mother to her siblings, and they all loved and cherished her greatly. She made sure they got to school on time, ate their dinner, did their homework, and went to church. Delbert, Johnny, Bob, Barbara, Janet, David, Mike, and Mark will all miss her tremendously.

Martha and Pat had a very happy life together. They were married at St. Henry's in Charleston, Missouri. Martha loved being a wife and mother. She enjoyed taking vacations with her kids, and later in life, with her grandkids. When asked what her greatest accomplishment in life was, her answer was always "my family".

Six children are left on this earth to mourn her passing: Brenda, Patty, Larry, Jim, Dotty, and Cindy, along with their spouses Mike, Billy, Annie, Teresa, and David. Also missing their inspirational role model are her 19 grandchildren with 15 spouses, 26 great grandkids (with one more on the way), and 4 great great grand kids. Beyond family, she will be missed by many friends, for everyone that met her loved her.

Many years ago, Martha wanted to get a job and asked Pat if she could. He didn't really want her to but told her she could because he didn't think she could find one. He should have known not to underestimate her! Not only did she find a job, but she retired from Brown Shoe Company after working there for 20 years.

Martha's favorite holiday was Christmas. She was a devout Catholic who loved celebrating her Lord's birth. It has always been a tradition to gather at her house on Christmas Eve. Well until her house got too small for her growing family and we had to rent a pavilion, but it was still considered "Grandma's house". She loved to see her family all gathered together, seeing the joy on their faces and sharing in a meal with them. She would just sit back, smile as she watched them open presents, and watch their eyes light up when Santa came in the room. No matter how old you were, you knew you were expected to be at Grandma Switzer's on Christmas Eve. You were truly missed if you couldn't make it. She made it a point to have something for every single person there. It may not have been much (I mean there were 76 of us at last count), but no matter what it was, it came from her heart. Later that night, she enjoyed taking as many members of her family as she could to midnight mass. There were times when she'd fill up two pews or more.

Martha loved to dance and won medals in the senior Olympics for her dancing skills! She listened to music all the time and would be moving to the beat in the living room or whenever the mood struck her.

Her wishes in the end were to be with Pat, the love of her life, and for her children to always get along and love each other. She was a mother to many more than just her children, a Godly example to all women, and a treasure to all who knew her. As a Christian woman, Proverbs 31:28 describes her best. It says, "her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her."

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 10, 2020 from 5-8 p.m. at Mizell Funeral Home 904 W. Washington St. Cuba, Missouri.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 11, 2020 11:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church, with Father Dan Lueckennotte as the celebrant.

Graveside service will be held on Thursday, November 12, 2020 11:00 a.m. at Oak Grove Cemetery, Charleston, Missouri.

If desired, memorials would be appreciated to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
