Lucy Mae Bates of Cuba, Missouri was born September 12, 1940 to the union of Ocie Allen and Effie (nee: Wilkinson) Neff and left from this life, surrounded by her family, on Saturday, December 17, 2011 at Missouri Baptist Medical Center, St. Louis, Missouri. Lucy was united in marriage to John Bates on April 6, 1957 at St. Louis, Missouri and to this union four children were born John, Gary, Joyce and Theresa. Lucy worked as a seamstress for many years. She could sew anything from dresses to draperies. She was a member of the Red Hat Ladies and TOPS. She raised dogs, made ceramics, collected dolls and made pin crafts. She enjoyed reading, playing cards and dominos, babysitting for her grandchildren and all children, but what she truly loved most was spending time with her family and friends. Lucy was a loving daughter, wife, mom, grandma, great grandma, sister, sister-in-law, niece, aunt, great aunt, cousin and friend of many. She will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her. Lucy is preceded in death by her parents Ocie and Effie Neff, one brother Ocie L. Neff, sister-in-law Mary Stevens and other relatives and friends. Those who are left to treasure her memory and to continue her legacy are her loving husband John Bates of Cuba, two sons John Bates of Union, Missouri and Gary and wife Clarissa Bates of Lake St. Louis, Missouri, two daughters Joyce Robbins of Washington, Missouri and Theresa Marcou of St. Ann, Missouri, twelve grandchildren: Ryan, Justin, Tyler, Kelly, Kristy, Kody, Steven, Jeffery, David, Cody, John and Emmie, four great grandchildren Gracie Marie, Gracie Lou, Kingston and Brooklyn, two brothers Ronnie and wife Debbie Neff of St. Louis, and Keith and wife Brenda Neff of Cuba, three sisters Gloria Worley of Cuba, Wanda Hardin of Sullivan and Sheila Neff of Cuba, sister-in-law Carol Neff of St. Louis, one aunt Nina Skaggs of High Ridge, Missouri, sister-in-law Ruby and husband Ray Cowee of St. Louis, nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins and many friends. Visitation will be Monday, December 19, 2011 from 5 till 8 PM at the Mizell Funeral Home, 904 W Washington, Cuba, Missouri. Funeral service will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at the Mizell Funeral Home with Pastor Don Mitchell officiating. Special music will be "In the Garden" and "Amazing Grace". Family will be honored to serve as pallbearers. Interment and prayers will follow at the Martin Trask Cemetery, Cherryville, Missouri. Memorial contributions may be made to Martin Trask Cemetery in Lucy's memory. The Mizell Funeral Home is honored to serve Lucy's family.
