Joyce C. Henkel of Cuba, Missouri was born Saturday, June 11, 1932 at Belva, Oklahoma to the union of John Charles and Rena Brobst Major. Joyce went home to be with The Lord on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at Rolla Manor at the age of 85 years. Joyce was united in marriage to William "Bill" Henkel on July 5, 1953 at Vance Air Force Base Chapel, Enid, Oklahoma and they were the proud parents of one daughter Sandra. Joyce started her working career at a young age, she was a soda girl at a drugstore in Oklahoma. Then she went to work, after graduating from Fairview High School, as a dental tech in Enid, Oklahoma. She worked many years as a sales clerk for Woolworth's in Enid, Oklahoma and Festus, Missouri. Her last sales clerk job was at Sad Sam's in Festus. In 1996 Joyce and Bill moved from Eldon to Cuba. Joyce played the guitar for many years. You could find them playing music at the Cuba Senior Center every Wednesday and at every Saturday Jam Session. They also played in a seven-person Gospel Group that played at churches, nursing homes, senior centers and many other places. Joyce was an avid reader and she enjoyed making quilts. For several years she belonged to the Quilting Circle at church. She enjoyed camping and fishing. After moving to Cuba, they attended the Cuba Christian Church, until Joyce's health began to decline. What Joyce truly loved most in life was spending time with her family and friends. Joyce was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, great aunt, sister-in-law and friend of many. She will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her. She is preceded in death by her parents John Charles and Rena Major, three sisters Virginia, Edna Mae and Thelma, three brothers Jake, Willis and Kenneth. Those who are left to treasure her memory and to continue her legacy are her loving husband of sixty-four years William "Bill" Henkel of the home, one daughter Sandra "Sandy" and husband Myron Soppeland of Cuba, two grandsons Chris and wife Andrea Soppeland of St. Louis, and James and wife Tracy Soppeland of Cuba, five great grandchildren and one on the way; Kayla, William, Tanya, Jonathan and Logan, one sister Gwendolyn Campbell of McAllen, Texas, nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and a host of other relatives and many friends. Visitation will be Thursday, January 11, 2018 from 4:00 till 7:00 pm at the Mizell Funeral Home, 904 W Washington Street, Cuba. Funeral service will 10:00 am Friday, January 12, 2018 at the Mizell Funeral Home of Cuba with Pastor Woodrow Martin officiating. Special recorded music will be "I'll Fly Away", "He Touched Me" and "The Old Country Church". Interment and prayers will be at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Pevely, Missouri on Friday, January 12, 2018 at 2:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cuba Senior Center in Joyce's memory. The Mizell Funeral Home of Cuba is honored to be serving Joyce's family.
