James Edward 'Jim' Palmer

James Edward "Jim" Palmer of Cuba, Missouri was born Sunday, November 14, 1943 at St. Louis, Missouri to the union of Harry and Marjorie (nee: Miller) Palmer and left from this life on Sunday, February 4, 2018 at his home in Cuba at the age of 74 years. Jim proudly served in the United States Navy, during the Vietnam War, from 11 September 1961 till 14 October 1964. After returning home from the Navy, Jim went to work for his dad in the refrigeration business. In 1966 Jim met a beautiful young lady named Barbara Hughes. They were married on June 1, 1968 in Steelville, Missouri. They were the proud parents of Christopher "Chris" and Elizabeth "Beth". In 1972 Jim and Barbara moved from Springfield back to Cuba and Jim purchased the Cuba Refrigeration business from his dad. Jim owned and operated the Cuba Refrigeration from 1973 till 2004, when he sold the business to his son Chris. Jim was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed fishing, golfing and deer season. Jim's birthday was always celebrated at deer camp. If he was feeding the fish, grilling or listening to the radio his trusty side kick Storm was always right beside him. To know Jim was to know that he was a very social guy. He never met a stranger and he could talk to any one at any time. He listened to the Oldie Station every Saturday morning and he listened to every Cardinals Baseball game. Jim enjoyed his music loud enough that the neighbors hear it. Jim was a member of the Legion Post 522, Masonic Lodge 312, VFW, DAV, Eastern Star 398, Abou Ben Adhem Shrine and the Ozark Shrine Club and Trinity Chapel of Cuba. Jim was very community minded, patriotic and a respected veteran. What Jim truly treasured and loved most in life was spending time with his family and friends. Jim was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, great uncle, brother-in-law and friend of everyone. He will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him. He is preceded in death by his parents Harry and Marjorie Palmer, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Edward Hughes, Maryann Hughes, Bernie and wife Barbara Hughes, Ervin and wife Eiko Hughes, Jim Powers, Bonnie and husband Howard Stephens, Patsy Hughes, Jim Hughes and other family and friends. Those who are left to treasure his memory and to continue his legacy are his loving wife of nearly fifty years Barbara Palmer of the home, two children Chris and wife Tammi Palmer of Cuba and Beth and husband Mike Turnbough of Cuba, two amazing grandsons Eli and Al Palmer of Cuba, one sister Kathy and husband Harold Jarvis of St. Peters, Missouri, brothers-in-law; Carl Hughes of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, Art and wife Dixie Hughes of Cuba, Paul and wife Lisa Hughes of Cuba and Joe and wife Jackie Hughes of Cuba, sisters-in-law Violet "Fern" Powers of St. Louis, Gloria and husband Jack Cavanaugh of Sullivan and Eileen Hughes of Cuba, nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Visitation will be Thursday, February 8, 2018 from 3:00 till 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. Masonic Service at the Mizell Funeral Home, 904 W Washington Street, Cuba. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 9, 2018 at the Mizell Funeral Home of Cuba. Special recorded music will be ‘God Bless the USA" and "Go Rest High on that Mountain". The funeral service will conclude with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Legion Post 522 or the Masonic Lodge 312 in Jim's memory. In keeping with Jim's wishes, he will be cremated following the funeral service. The Mizell Funeral Home of Cuba is honored to be serving Jim's family.
