Evelyn Lorene Gowin of Cuba, Missouri was born May 2, 1921 at Beardstown, Illinois to the union of John R. and Alma Jane (nee: Shepard) Large and left from this life on Wednesday, August 8, 2012 at Cuba, Missouri at the age of 91 years. Evelyn was united in marriage to Robert Vedder on June 5, 1937 and to this union four children were born Janet Lea, Sharon Lou, Linda Mae and Robert Allen. After Robert passed away Evelyn was united in marriage to Donald Gowin on August 4, 1984 at Springfield, Missouri. Evelyn worked for Verizon Telephone Company of Cuba for several years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cuba and in her spare time she enjoyed baking cookies and pies, camping, building a camp fire to cook brats and smores but what she loved most was spending time with family and friends. Evelyn was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great grandmother, step mother, step grandmother, step great grandmother, sister-in-law, aunt, great aunt and friend of many. She will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her. Evelyn is preceded in death by her parents John R. and Alma Jane Large, first husband Robert Vedder, three brothers Wilmer, Harold & Kenneth Large, four sisters Zelda Reining, Clara Hendrickson, Alice Hay and Audrey Ballinger and other relatives and friends. Those who are left to treasure her memory and to continue her legacy are her loving husband Donald Gowin of Cuba, three daughters Jan and husband Jim Noel of Kelseyville, California, Sharon and husband Celestino Sanchez of Lima, Peru and Linda and husband Marvin Maune of New Bern, North Carolina, one son Robert and wife Glenda Vedder of Springfield, Missouri, step mother of Dennis and wife Terri Gowin of New Orleans, Louisiana, Dirk and wife Nickie Gowin of Louisville, Kentucky, Donna Gowin of Koshkonong, Missouri and Dixie and husband John Williams of West Plains, Missouri, two brothers Donald Ray and wife Betty Large of Greenfield, Illinois and Clifford John and wife Marie Large of Jacksonville, Illinois, nine grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, five step grandchildren, three step great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Visitation will be from 5 till 7 PM Friday, August 10, 2012 at the Mizell Funeral Home, 904 W Washington, Cuba, Missouri. Funeral service 7:00 PM Friday, August 10, 2012 at the Mizell Funeral Home with Pastor Stephen Brubaker and Pastor Bob Knight officiating. Special music will be "Because He Lives", "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" and "Amazing Grace" by George and Jeanette Ashley. Interment and prayers will be 11:00 AM Saturday, August 11, 2012 at the Young Blood Cemetery, Nortonville, Illinois with Pastor Charles Keene officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Meramec Baptist Camp or the Phelps County Baptist Camp in Evelyn's memory. The Mizell Funeral Home is honored to be serving Evelyn's family.
