Eugene R. Bast of Bourbon was born Thursday, April 9, 1942 at St. James, Missouri to the union of George Lester and Berenice (nee: Daehn) Bast and left from this life on Friday, January 11, 2013 at Redwood Manor in Bourbon, Missouri at the age of 70 years. Eugene was the fifth child of thirteen in his family. He attended Holy Cross Catholic Elementary School and graduated from Cuba High School in 1963. Eugene was very adept in electronics, working on the old tube T.V.'s and radios. He worked as a mechanic with his dad at the family business, Les Auto Repair. He continued his mechanic skills after his father's death working with many local business people keeping things functioning. Eugene cared for his Grandmother in her apartment when she needed help due to health and age concerns. After Nannie passed he moved home to help care for his parents. He cared for his Mom for many years, just like he had for Nannie, before Mom went to live with his sisters in Kansas City. Everyone knew Eugene, he was a people person and loved to talk to everyone he met using his usual smile and pleasant demeanor. He enjoyed getting out to play Pinochle at the card parties and had a love for music. At home he enjoyed growing his garden which was brimming with strawberries, asparagus and other garden favorites. Eugene loved to spend time with his pet animals over the years, recently Patches was a wonderful companion for him. Eugene was a life time member of the Holy Cross Catholic Church family and was involved with the Knights of Columbus working with the other knights. He also mowed the grass for the Knights of Columbus Hall for many years. His favorite thing was spending time with family. He enjoyed working with his brothers and sisters, in laws and nieces and nephews. He was always proud to introduce any of the family when he was out with them. Eugene was a loving son, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, great uncle, nephew, cousin and friend. He will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him. He is preceded in death by his parent George Lester and Berenice Bast, one brother George Bast Jr., two sisters Virginia and Jean Bast and other relatives and friends. Those who are left to treasure his memory and to continue his legacy are his five brothers Donald and wife Linda Bast of Cuba, Gerard and wife Carolyn Bast of Black Jack, Missouri, Bill and wife Nancy Bast of Athens, Georgia, Larry Bast of Strafford, Missouri and Charles and wife Suzanne Bast of Winchester, Kentucky, four sisters Sr. Rose Bast, Joan and husband Dr. Leonardo Viril, Vera and husband Joe Maschek and Kay Bast all of Kansas City, Missouri, one uncle Walter Daehn of Cuba, nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins and many friends. Visitation will be 4:00 till 8:00 PM Thursday, January 17, 2013 at the Mizell Funeral Home, 904 W Washington, Cuba with a 6:00 PM Prayer Service. Celebration of mass will be 10:00 AM Friday, January 18, 2013 at the Holy Cross Catholic Church of Cuba with Father James Finder as celebrant. Interment and prayers will follow at the Holy Cross Cemetery, Cuba, Missouri. The Mizell Funeral Home is honored to be serving the Bast family.
