Carl William West was born January 14, 1941 to John E. and Catherine (Weigle) West at Sullivan, MO, passed away at St.Vincent's Hospital, Indianapolis, Indiana on January 15, 2012. Carl spent his early years in Cuba, MO. His family moved to Indianapolis in 1956. He was in the first graduating class of North Central High School and attended Indiana University. Carl is survived by his wife, Deborah Jordan West and her son, Robb Day; the mother of his children, Constance McCammond West; children, Catherine (Keith) Allen, Christina (John) Hawkins, Carl John (Michelle)West, and Chad W. West(Pam Gladson); brother John W.(Pamela) West of Indianapolis, and sister, Marilyn (Charles, deceased) Stewart of Cuba, MO. His pride and joy was watching his children become productive adults. He delighted in his role as Pa-Pa to nine grandchildren: Keith, Mark, and Erik Allen, Jack, Elle, Joey and Michael Hawkins, and Olivia and Cole William West. Carl's parents stressed Christian values and he and his siblings were encouraged to develop self-confidence and to set goals for the future. Carl was a loving husband and father, and an astute, successful business man. His experience of polio, destroying the muscles of his left shoulder at the age of four, presented a life altering challenge. With the care and support of The Shriners Hospital in St. Louis, along with his family, he learned skills that enabled him to remarkably compensate. His approach was to try harder to accomplish tasks others would find difficult. As a teenager he was the most sought after golf caddy at Algonquin Country Club in Webster Groves, MO while simultaneously managing his lucrative lawn care business. He was known for his abilities and his out-going, warm personality. Carl never met a stranger. His enjoyment of the game of golf allowed him to play a great round with a distinctive swing. During the past six months, Carl's greatest challenge came with the diagnosis of Stage IV lung cancer. As usual, he approached this one with the same determination, positive attitude and sense of humor for which he was known. During this struggle he was chosen by St. Vincent's Hospital as a personality appearing in a media marketing campaign for the benefit of lung cancer research. For over thirty five years Carl has been known as a respected neighborhood business man and entrepreneur, operating automotive service stations, convenience stores and car washes. He has been recognized nationally for industry excellence, receiving many exclusive awards and participated in numerous local committees and national petroleum company advisory councils. Carl was a long term member of Millersville Lodge #126 AF & AM, Murat Shrine Temple, the Scottish Rite and Hillcrest Country Club. Visitation will be at Flanner Buchanan Mortuary, 325 E.
