Please accept my sincere and heartfelt condolences for the Kamler family and all of Mel's relatives. He had a full life and leaves a living legacy in all of you. I didn't know Melvin well, because I was only in Cuba for 6 years, so for me he was one of your friend's parents you meet when you're in high school. But the times our paths crossed were always pleasant and I recall some times when he was just hilarious.
Also, you can tell a tree by its fruit, and I had the privilege of knowing Mel's wonderful children Debbie and Steve. My age was such that I didn't get to know his other kids, but did get to know his wonderful nephews Greg and Russ Klouzek. It was through them that I knew what a great guy Mel was. I graduated high school the same year as Russ; Steve & Greg were a couple of years ahead of us in school, and Debbie was ahead of them, so I didn't know her as well. The same is true of Dana and Laura Klouzek (her brother Lon West was in my class, too). So Debbie, Dana & Laura were just a couple of years out of sphere; siblings of friends.
Had I been of the previous generation, perhaps I would have had the honor of knowing Mel directly. As it is, I am sincerely grateful and consider myself blessed for landing at the age of 12 in - of all the places in the world - Cuba, Missouri, if nothing else for getting to know Steve, Greg and Russ. The fondest - and definitely the most fun - memories I have of my time in Cuba involve the three of them. Such great, great guys. In fact, even though life took me far away and I'm terrible at keeping in touch, I can safely say that those are some of the fondest - and most fun - of my memories, period.
I know Mel had extensive family in the area, so I'm sure there are folks I went to school with who were related by blood or marriage to him, and I just don't know or remember all the connections. That being the case, I imagine Mel Kamler blessed me in more ways than I know.
You are all in my prayers as you grieve. No matter how many years a loved one gets, or even if it's clear the time is at hand, it really hurts when they go. Bless you all, and rest assured that Mel's good nature and his many positive qualities live on in all of you. You're his legacy and an enduring mark he leaves on the world.
All the best,
Peter Watson
